Oh the sweet taste of local berries and cherries!
Summer in and around Glacier Park blossoms into a fruit
filled odyssey where you can sample directly from the
tree, bush, or buy already picked fruity gems from
roadside stands.
Life in the Flathead
is a bowl of cherries!
The Flathead area in Western Montana boasts one of the
best growing regions in the country. Every year visitors
are encouraged to visit the orchards along Flathead Lake
to pick cherries or buy them from roadside stands.
Cherries grown here in the Flathead are shipped all over
the world, with several thousand tons harvested
annually. The harvest's popularity attracts visitors,
making the a major contributor to the local economy.
The summer cherry season is celebrated in the area with
such festivals as the Yellow Bay Cherry Fest in May,
which includes the crowning of a Cherry Queen, cherry
bake sale, raffles and live music.
In July 2007 the town of Polson, located at the southern
most tip of Flathead Lake, held its
first annual Cherry Festival July
21st. Games, contests, good things to eat and
buy highlighted this family fun event.
The best news of all is your vacation doesn't have to
coincide with cherry season, there are delicious
Flathead Cherry products available
all year long from local vendors. From
Flathead Cherry wine to Flathead Cherry coffee there are
all sorts of ways to try this local flavor. We recommend
Flathead Cherry ice cream. Be sure to sample and enjoy!
Rub elbows with the
bears in search of purple gold.
A local favorite, the elusive huckleberry is best
sampled in area restaurants and locally crafted
confections. Why? Because you'll never learn the secret
picking spots of longtime locals, and who wants to
worry about playing nice and sharing with the bears who
find you in their huckleberry patch!
We suggest places like The Wild Rose and The Apple
Barrel, where
huckleberries can be bought in quart ziploc bags and
taken home to enjoy. Hillary loves making huckleberry
pies with a handful of blackberries to mix it up.
The town of Whitefish pays tribute to the huckleberry in
August with its annual celebration, Huckleberry Days.
Craftspeople from across the country show their wares in
this popular, juried show, and huckleberry candies,
muffins, cookies, pies, preserves and ice cream are in
abundance.
