Pond Skimmiing Competition at The Whitefish Mountain Resort

Prepare for some laughs in this annual celebration of the close of the season.

A new annual tradition, the Pond Skimming Competition at the Whitefish Mountain Resort on the Big Mountain is a replacement for the hallowed Furniture Races, a rite of passage that is now part of the pages of Big Mountain history.

Have no fear, however, the Pond Skimming Competition has no shortage of thrills and spills. The only other time we've heard crowds make as many 'oohs' and 'aahs' was on the Fourth of July.

Contestants in zany costumes plummet down the face of the mountain in an attempt to skim across a faux turquoise pond, extra points are given for splashing the crowd and making it across a trick box at the end of the water feature (new for 2008). The atmosphere is festive and relaxed, with people of all ages turning out to see the follies. And if you're not 21, or not fond of the idea of an icy dip at the close of winter then come up to the mountain in costume, it's a good excuse to lighten up in anticipation of spring! See you next year!
